Chic-A-Sea Restaurant is a straightforward spot in Newport News for quick, well-seasoned fried chicken and seafood, catering mostly to folks on the go. Located on Jefferson Avenue, it operates more like a takeout joint than a sit-down restaurant—there aren’t tables to dine inside, so visitors typically order at the counter or use the drive-thru, where staff will even bring your food out to your car. This setup appeals to busy locals grabbing a meal during lunch breaks or families picking up dinner without the fuss of traditional dining.

The menu centers around no-frills southern-style fried chicken and fish, featuring sandwiches like the “Big Chic Combo” and a fish sandwich that earns steady praise for being fresh and hot. Chicken sides such as fried gizzards and chicken livers, along with classic Southern sides like mashed potatoes with gravy, cole slaw, and baked beans, create that down-home comfort meal many here expect. While some classics deliver consistently, like the gizzards, certain sides may occasionally feel less fresh, reflecting the quick-service nature of the place.

The atmosphere is informal and energetic, highlighted by the friendly and familiar greetings from staff and customers alike. Diners often notice the sense of neighborhood connection—people seem to know one another, and the crew behind the counter carries a respectful, welcoming attitude. It’s a spot where local regulars pop in for a familiar taste anchored in decades of community tradition. Nostalgic visitors recall the distinct seasoning that hasn’t changed much since the 70s and 80s, speaking to the place’s lasting local footprint.

Parking and wait times can be a challenge, especially during peak hours, which suggests early-to-mid day visits might offer a smoother experience. The no-table setup means it’s best suited for those who don’t mind eating at home or on the move. Anyone looking to enjoy hearty fried chicken with a quickly served, neighborhood-friendly vibe—and a touch of old-school flavor—will find Chic-A-Sea a dependable, if unpretentious, choice in this part of Newport News.

This is a small restaurant with no tables as a sit down restaurant, it's designed to go. You can order inside at the counter or through the drive thru and they will bring your food out if u order thru the drive thru. Good Food! Great fried fish and fried chicken! They have great chicken sandwiches that's very popular!

I been hearing about this place for years. So I tried the gizzard dinner with fries. The gizzards was great the fries tasted freezer burnt. They could include the drink with the dinner but it was separate. Total was $12. They drive thru is a little different they bring the order out to you.

Childhood memories. I remember going here during the late '70s and early '80s. The chicken has a very distinct taste that I loved!

Went for my first time yesterday. Not just the food that was delicious, but the people who work there are amazing. Everyone that came in seemed to know each other. Such a feel-good vibe! Loved it!

This restaurant is a hidden gem. I love the freshness of the food, and the corn fritters was my first time having and they are so good. Fish is hot and fresh and the chicken is seasoned so well. The only issue is the wait and parking is so bad! However this does not hinder me from returning. Customer service from the young ladies are always respectful and friendly.
